This month we have a very special pet of the month. Meet Oden! Oden is a young boy who was presented to us with a leg injury to his left hind leg due to jumping out of the bed of a moving truck. Due to the extent of the injury Oden’s previous owners elected to relinquish him to the care of Village Park. Radiographs were taken, which showed Oden’s left Femur was broken; Oden was going to need his leg amputated. A phone call was made to Dr Shawn Behrenfeld, a local surgeon who takes on more complex surgical cases. We informed him about Oden and without hesitation, Dr . Behrenfeld offered to amputate Oden’s leg pro bono.
Oden quickly won over the hearts of our treatment staff. He was a little shy at first, but with the love and encouragement of our team, Oden came out of his shell. Oden has been socializing with Fiddlesticks and Stevie as well as playtime Piper, Stacie’s dog.
Oden has also help educate a class of children from the school down the street were walking to the La Quinta Museum. The children inquired about Oden’s leg. It was explained to them how dangerous it can be to keep your dog in the back of a truck bed. Oden was very unsure about the group of kids who all so desperately wanted to pet him. With some encouragement, he greeted the class of children at the fence. As the class walked away, they cheered for Oden, which made Oden very happy.
Oden was at our hospital for about 2 weeks recovering. We all knew Oden was going home with someone who works here, it was only a matter of time! We were trying hard to groom Kristine into taking Oden home as a birthday present for her dog, Walter Melon. However, It was Krysten who fell in love with Oden. Her family came to visit Oden multiple times before the decision was final, Oden was going home with Krysten! In addition, this adoption is so special because this is Krysten’s first family dog! To To further educate herself, Krysten has been picking the brains of all the fellow dog owners about nutrition, training and getting pet insurance for Oden.
We are so happy Oden is staying in the Village Park family!
