Exotic Pet Care in La Quinta, CA

When it comes to health, your exotic pet is no different than any other family member. Pet health and wellness care is essential for all types of birds, reptiles, exotics and pocket pets. At Village Park Animal Hospital we recommend regular visits to the your veterinarian where we will discuss your exotic pets general health, habitat, and diet needs to ensure your exotic pet is thriving. Many birds, reptiles and small mammals do not require vaccines, but should have regular check ups. We do have pig vaccines available.

When you bring your exotic pet in for its examination at Village Park Animal Hospital, we ask that you bring in the following material for you and veterinarian to discuss:

  • Photos of their enclosures / habitat to ensure proper husbandry is being performed.
  • A list of foods and/or supplements you are giving.

We provide exotic pet care for the following:

Avian Veterinary Care

  • Annual wellness exams are recommended
  • Routine wing, beak and nail trims.
  • In house fecal cytology
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Respiratory distress
    • Not eating for 24 hour period
    • Injury or wounds
    • Egg bound (female bird that lays eggs regularly and has not     recently laid an egg. The area where the egg comes out will look swollen)
    • Bird is huddled, not perching, sitting at bottom of enclosure, or ruffled feathers

Rabbit Veterinary Care

  • Annual wellness examinations are recommended
  • Oral exam and teeth check to ensure healthy chewing habits
  • Anesthetic procedures including spay, neuter and molar grind.
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Spinal trauma or inability to use back legs
    • Not eating for more than a couple hours
    • Facial swelling
    • Skin problems
    • Diarrhea or urinary problems
    • Nasal discharge

Pocket Pets

  • Annual wellness examinations are recommended
  • Oral exam and teeth check to ensure healthy chewing habits
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Trauma or wounds
    • Eye abnormalities
    • Facial swelling
    • Diarrhea or urinary problems
    • Diarrhea, lethargy, or not eating over 24 hours duration

Reptile Veterinary Care

***It is VERY important to bring photos of your reptiles enclosure and list of food you are feeding to you pets exam

  • Annual wellness examinations are recommended
  • Nail trims on certain species
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Rectal prolapse or impactions
    • Trauma or wounds
    • Lethargy or inactivity
    • Not eating normally
    • Any neurological signs (tremors, seizures, not moving normally)
    • Eye issues

Pig Veterinary Care

  • Immunizations are recommended for pigs
    • Combo respiratory vaccine given at 8,12,16 weeks, then boosted annually.
    • Tetanus vaccines given at 12,16 weeks then annually
    • Iron injection given at 8 weeks to prevent anemia
    • Ivermectin injection given at 8 weeks to prevent/treat scabies
  • Annual wellness examinations are recommended
  • Annual fecal examinations
  • Hoof trims
  • Spay and neuter piglets before they reach 25lbs
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Overheating
    • Not eating for 24 hour duration
    • Foreign body ingestion
    • Vomiting
    • Injuries or wounds
    • Eye or skin issues

Goat Veterinary Care

  • Immunizations are recommended for goats
    • C,D(clostridium),T(tetanus) vaccine starts at 4-8  weeks then boosted 3-4 weeks from then. After that they are given annually
  • Annual wellness examinations are recommended
  • Hoof trims
  • Neuter before 3 months of age(usually leave females intact)
  • Emergencies situations which should be seen right away:
    • Trauma or wounds
    • Lethargy
    • Not eating for 24 hour duration
    • Any neurological signs (tremors, seizures, not moving normally)
    • Foreign body ingestion
